I have bricked my DME before using one of those dodgy cables off eBay. This reduces the cable bandwidth and makes it slow, and also unreliable. So my car is a 57 plate and i think it’s production is 03/2007 but not 100% sure on that. There's actually a bug in the firmware of those cheap Chinese K+DCAN cables, where every second packet of data getting transmitted to the car gets lost, and it needs to be re-sent twice. The confusion for me is coming from a change in cables by BMW in 2007.
